Hospital costs in America currently total over $4 trillion a year and 30% of that – or about 1.24 trillion dollars – goes towards hospital services. On average, U.S citizens spend $2,607 per day on their medical bills, with California leading at $3,726 per day, followed closely by Oregon, which pays $3,271 a day.

Hospital stays are expensive and can run a hefty bill if you stay overnight. The average hospital stay runs $11,700, with Medicare ($13,600) and “other” insurance ($12,600) paying top dollar and the uninsured ($9,300) and Medicaid ($9,800) paying the least.

Those are alarming figures, especially for families with limited budgets or no insurance. It is not surprising that 60%-65% of all bankruptcies are related to medical expenses.
